Steps to distance and calories
What any step count is worth in kilometres, miles, minutes and calories — adjusted for your height and weight, with a page for every popular target.
How the numbers are worked out
Two things turn a step count into a distance and a calorie figure: how long your stride is, and how much you weigh. A walking step is roughly 0.41 times your height, so a person 170 cm tall covers a little over 0.70 m per step and someone 185 cm covers about 0.77 m. Multiply your step length by the number of steps and you have the distance.
Calories are trickier, but a robust rule of thumb is about half a calorie per kilogram of body weight for every kilometre walked. That is a net figure — the extra energy of walking over sitting still. It is why a phone or watch usually reports a larger number: those add your baseline burn on top. Pace, hills, wind and carrying a load all raise the real cost.

Frequently asked questions
How many kilometres is 10,000 steps?
For an average adult around 170 cm tall it is roughly 7 km, or about 4.4 miles, because a walking step is a little over 0.7 m. Taller people cover more ground per step, so the exact distance depends on your height.
How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
Very roughly 250–350 calories for a 70 kg adult, using about half a calorie per kilogram of body weight per kilometre walked. Heavier people, hills and a faster pace all push it up. Fitness trackers usually show a higher number because they add the calories you would have burned anyway at rest.
Is 10,000 steps a day a real target?
The 10,000 figure began as a 1960s marketing slogan, not a medical rule. Recent studies suggest most of the health benefit appears well before then — often around 7,000–8,000 steps a day — with more still being better for many people. Any increase on your current average helps.
How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps?
At a normal-to-brisk 5 km/h it is roughly 80–90 minutes of actual walking, spread across the day. Slower strolling takes longer; a fast pace less.
